"The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you." General Dwight Eisenhower wrote these words to the brave soldiers before they stormed the shores of Normandy, France 74 years ago.
Today, we celebrate freedom, bravery, and the American soldiers who fought for victory during World War II. At the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., veterans from Indiana and Kentucky gathered together with friends, family, and onlookers to lay a wreath in memory of those who have lost their lives in service to this country. I was honored to thank these brave men and women personally and hear their stories of service.
It's an incredible opportunity to hear the firsthand stories of World War II veterans. Their memories and experiences are what keep history alive. These are the faces of some of the heroes:
